As performance appraisal systems go, the performance review appears to be a winner in the eyes of those in the executive suite. Since the review process includes reviews by supervisors, and up to eight other persons made up of coworkers, customers, or clients, it is a diverse look at an individual employee. Usually, the review process also includes a self-appraisal. Most companies have a mission statement, a vision statement, and a statement of goals. The review gives executives insight into the attitudes and skills that a company feels are desirable towards meeting these targets. That said, there are several benefits associated with the performance review process but, the company must be committed to the process — when management fails to have a good implementation and follow-up plan, the system will fail and may even give undesired results.

The Benefits of the 360 Performance Review
I asked open-ended questions for recipients who wanted them, but also tried to save time with short answer form fields and some pre-populated choices. If you do this, adapt the questions and answers to your personality and situation. I also stated that in the preface. None of the comments were totally surprising not a bad thing! While I regularly ask coworkers for feedback, making the feedback totally anonymous transfers the burden of interpretation on to the recipient, me.
Soliciting input from other senior staff and co-workers is an excellent way for a manager to collect feedback that forms a degree view that is helpful for employee development reviews. Organizations that use such a review process, however, can leave managers awash in a sea of data. There are better ways to ask. Without a structured question format for reviews, free-form answers may provide a lot of data but won't help the employee grow and prosper.
