A volcano is a rupture in the crust of a planetary-mass object , such as Earth , that allows hot lava , volcanic ash , and gases to escape from a magma chamber below the surface. On Earth, volcanoes are most often found where tectonic plates are diverging or converging , and most are found underwater. For example, a mid-oceanic ridge , such as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge , has volcanoes caused by divergent tectonic plates whereas the Pacific Ring of Fire has volcanoes caused by convergent tectonic plates. Volcanoes can also form where there is stretching and thinning of the crust's plates, such as in the East African Rift and the Wells Gray-Clearwater volcanic field and Rio Grande Rift in North America. This results in hotspot volcanism , of which the Hawaiian hotspot is an example.

LESSON 10 OUTLINE
In , the collapse of one of its several lava domes triggered a megatsunami that killed 14, people in Japan's worst volcanic-related disaster. The volcano was most recently active from to , and a large eruption in generated a pyroclastic flow that killed 43 people, including three volcanologists. The latter emerged during the eruptions of the early, eponymous Heisei era — It is located on the outer ring of the Chitose Caldera centering on Tachibana Bay in the west of the peninsula. As a result, the usage of only eight mountains sometimes three mountains was coined in a narrow sense, but historically it is a name that refers to the entire mountain range towering over the sea.
