As a child, Guy adored his mother and loathed his absent father. His mother was very literary and passed on her love of books to her son, Guy, and his brother, Herve. Mathilde is a beautiful woman but is only middle class. She wants nothing more than to be rich and have a big home. She borrows a necklace from a friend to go to a ball and she looses the necklace. She works for ten years to pay off the necklace and when she goes back to repay the woman, she is told the necklace is a fake.

We are greedy. We as humans cling to the materialistic things in our lives. Some of us have everything we need to live a perfectly comfortable life, but keep wanting. Greed controls almost everyone, no matter how many possessions we have in our name. In this, when our greed exceed our needs, we lose sight of what is important, leading to our detriment. Holmes here explains that the authorities believe they deserve this to control the workers and the problems these workers are facing with the labor is their own fault. Here you can see in the book that the migrant workers have to work in order to live but they work harder than those who have citizenship and make less money.

Now satisfied that she looks the part, she attends the party forgetting for just a moment that she truly thought she did not belong. After the party she realizes that she has lost her friends diamond necklace and searches for it to no avail. Loisel lies to her friend by saying the clasp was being repaired giving her some time to gather up the funds to replace the necklace. Her husband seems more worried about the necklace than Mathilde is.
Mathilde Loisel is what some may call a desperate house wife, she stays in the house all with nothing to do. To escape this boredom, she day dreams about what her life would be like if she was rich living in a mansion surrounded by glamourous things and people. The different settings of this story developed the growth of the main character Mathilde. The narrator goes off to college to receive a huge culture shock only to realize that he belongs with his people in Wisconsin. This is where Mathilde day dreams about what life could be.
