But public health officials have been warning for years that in countries all over the world, rates of loneliness are skyrocketing. How did loneliness become a condition of modern life? To a certain extent, loneliness is part of the human condition. You can be lonely anywhere, even surrounded by friends.

British chemist Rosalind Franklin, born in in Notting Hill, and in she brought her physics and chemistry expertise to London Coal, where she investigated the properties of carbon. This was crucial to the war effort, which relied on coal and carbon for strategic equipment like gas masks. This research was the basis of her PhD thesis at Cambridge.
